Tempe is part of the east valley area of Greater Phoenix. It is also home to Arizona State University. The city is sprawling, sunny and beautiful with about 160,000 people living in 40 Square miles. However, unlike many big Arizona cities, this one has a walk able downtown district with a café society, many restaurants and charming boutiques and bars. Residents of Tempe tend towards being very progressive and hip. It is home to the main campus of Arizona State University and the Arizona State University School of Art, and the Herberger Institute for Design and Arts faculty. It also is home to the famous outdoor mall called the Tempe Marketplace and The Night Gallery, which is an exhibition place that showcases the work of local artists. The north end of the city surrounding the university campus is thought to be friendlier and have more of a neighborhood feel than the south end that is mainly office parks and office parks.
The most famous geological landmark here is a series of volcanic outcroppings called the Tempe Buttes through which the Salt River runs. The river has been partly dammed to form a recreational lake just north of the city. Residents use this lake, called Tempe Towne Lake for fishing, boating, rowing and kayaking. There is also hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, horse riding and Frisbee golf offered in the nearby South Mountain Parks area.
Tempe is also known for its vintage homes that are found mainly just west of the Arizona State University Campus. If you like home styles from the seventies you are likely to find them in the Tempe Gardens neighborhood along Mill Avenue and south of Southern Drive.
