Abilene, Texas, is probably mostly known for being near Dyess Air Force Base and being the home of three universities: Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene Christian University, and McMurry University. This means many of its citizens are either college students or in the military, with a number of other people working in agriculture.
While Abilene doesn’t have an official gay neighborhood, there are a number of gay bars in the city, and Dyess Air Force Base has jointly hosted LGBT Pride events for the past couple of years. Many gays and lesbians in Abilene go to nearby San Angelo or Lubbock, both of which have many more LGBT events. The city is working to increase the visibility of its community.
