Between 10 to 30 percent of LGBTQ homebuyers are parents, according to a recent survey of GayRealEstate.com’s more than 1500 partner agents. An estimated two million LGBTQ people are interested in adopting and same-sex parents are raising about four percent of all adopted children in the United States, according to the Movement Advancement Project (MAP). About 13 percent of same-sex couples have an adopted child compared to just 3 percent of different-sex couples, according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). 

While improving, with the number of same-sex couple adoptions more than tripling in recent years, there are unique struggles that LGBTQ people experience throughout the process of adopting. For example, along with systemic biases, adoption laws vary from state-to-state with some states retaining laws that create religious exemptions for adoption providers. This allows agencies to refuse adoptions to LGBTQ individuals on the basis of religious freedom. 

However, the Supreme Court has ruled that states must legally recognize adoptions across state lines and public support of LGBTQ adoption is steadily increasing. GayRealEstate.com intends to fight for adoption parity until all individuals are treated equally.
