Real Estate Service Conducts Internal Survey, Finds LGBTQ Homebuyers Prefer Cities to Suburbs

GayRealEstate.com Recently Conducted a Survey of 1500 Real Estate Agents, Finds LGBTQ Community Prefers City Life

Press Release - October 31, 2019

GayRealEstate.com, a service which connects buyers and sellers with compatible agents, recently surveyed their more than 1500 partner agents and found that the vast majority of their LGBTQ clients prefer living an urban lifestyle versus a suburban one. This may correlate with the lower percentage of LGBTQ individuals with children, as opposed to heterosexual and/or cisgender individuals, and increased protection from discrimination available in some cities.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are often affected most by their municipality, not their state, according to an article published in the New York Times. In Waco, Texas, the lone Justice of the Peace who presides over weddings recently admitted that she won’t do so for same-sex couples no matter the federal law. But Houston, just a three-hour drive away, has been a pioneer: Annise Parker, its mayor from 2010 to 2016, is the first openly LGBTQ person elected to lead one of the nation’s 10 most populous cities, according to the article.

The social and political landscape of rural America means that LGBTQ people in rural areas are more vulnerable to discrimination, according to a report released by the Movement Advancement Project (MAP). In addition to the structural challenges of small, rural communities described above, rural residents are less likely to know an LGBTQ person, and they are also, on average, less supportive of legal and policy protections for LGBTQ people, though rural public opinion is more diverse than might be assumed.

Likewise, decreased rates of parenting among LGBTQ individuals may contribute to their attraction to urban living. Among LGBTQ adults under 50 living alone or with a spouse or partner, 48 percent of women and 20 percent of men are raising a child who is under 18 years old, according to a report released by the Family Equality Council. The proportion of same-sex couples raising kids tends to be higher in more socially conservative areas of the country where LGBTQ people have come out later in life, and were more likely to have a child with a different-sex partner earlier in life, according to the report.

The GayRealEstate.com team works to identify the best LGBTQ-friendly cities and communities in each state and region of the country and cultivates relationships and deep networks in each, to provide their clients the support they need to find ideal residency. The service GayRealEstate.com provides is one of many that LGBTQ individuals can use to bypass the potential for anxiety, discrimination and inequitable treatment.
