Portsmouth Gay Neighborhoods

Portsmouth, Virginia, is home to some 100,000 people. It’s also home to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, one of the biggest Navy facilities in the country. This shipyard, like much of Portsmouth, is on the Elizabeth River, which provides the city with a bustling shipping industry.  A number of LGBT celebrities and allies hail from Portsmouth, including actress/comedian Wanda Sykes and the late fashion designer Perry Ellis.

While there’s no true gay neighborhood in Portsmouth, there are a number of gay bars and LGBT-owned businesses in the city as well as in nearby Norfolk and the greater Hampton Roads area.

Thinking of moving to Portsmouth? Condos in the city actually start out fairly cheap—you can find a small condo for $50,000. More expensive condos, though, may run as high as $850,000. Single family homes, too, may be priced fairly cheaply: a small fixer-upper home can be found for $40,000. Larger, more expensive homes may be priced at $875,000 or so.
