Bellevue, NE – Peaceful Gay Lifestyle in a Historic Town With a View

Bellevue, Nebraska lives up to the French translation of its name, which means “beautiful view.”  Located eight miles south of Omaha, it is located at an elevation of 1159 feet. It is bounded on the east by the Missouri River.  It was an originally a fur trading post for the American Fur Company that was located in St. Louis, Missouri and the Sarpy County Museum downtown has many artifacts from that era.

This scenic little city used to be the seat of government in Nebraska was originally settled in the 1830s and it has retained its old world pioneer and fur-trader charm. Many of the buildings in Bellevue are traditional turn-of-the-century Victorians and older ranch-style homes.

Today, it has a population of 50,137. It is connected to Omaha via the Kennedy Freeway that links it to the local Interstate highway system. In the last decade, the city has grown more than it has in a century.  During the 1990s the city’s population grew by 47.5% and there was a housing boom to reflect that.  As a result, there are plenty of gorgeous newer homes to be had as well as historical buildings.

Most of these newer and affordable upscale homes are located in the western and southern areas of the city. As of September 4, 2013, the average listing price for a home here was $158,406.

Bellevue is also very special because it is located on the site of Fontenelle Forest, which is 1,400 acres of privately owned forestland. This area has hiking trials with amazing views and a Forest nature Center. It is also near Haworth Park that also boasts miles of hiking trails alongside the Missouri River.

Bellevue has a close small-town feel with the Fire Department, Kiwanis Club and Chamber of Commerce regularly holding events.  The city also has a Farmer’s Market selling fresh goods from the nearby farms in Platte Valley every Saturday.

If you like to golf you will enjoy the city’s famous golf course which is known to be very challenging for this area because of its many sand-traps. The Tregaron Golf course is also known for having water on its ground – rare for Nebraska.

As this is a small-town in a traditional state, there are no dedicated gay bars or cafes here. The LGBT community is located in nearby Omaha. To experience the nightlife you have to travel about twenty minutes to downtown Omaha that boasts clubs such as Door 19, the Omaha Mining Company and the Flixx Video Bar.

Bellevue also has its own small university. The motto of Bellevue University, which offers continuing and professional education along with Bachelor, Master and Ph.D degrees, is “Real Learning for Real Life.” Like many small cities, the districts around the University tend to be the most progressive minded.
