Port Saint Lucie is a relatively young city – one that is less than 75 years old in fact, as it was officially incorporated in 1961. The name itself is rich in history, however, and according to historians, it is believed that the name "St. Lucie" was first given to this area by the Spanish hundreds of years ago after they began construction on a fort in the area on December 13th, the feast day of the Roman Catholic Saint Lucia. Since its official incorporation, the city grew quickly and has continued to do so.
