A Look at Bonita Springs’s History

Like much of Florida, before the time it became part of the United States, the Bonita Springs area was inhabited by native peoples. Ponce de Leon first arrived in the area in the 1500s, and from that point until Florida became part of the United States, there was also a strong Spanish presence.  In the late 1800s, the Army Corps of Engineers first arrived to survey the area and after that, settlers begin to trickle in slowly at first and then more quickly. The city was officially incorporated in the 1920s.
