Moss Landing, California is a tiny community with few living residents as it is actually a conglomerate of railway and port lands. A map view of the area reveals a cluster of low-lying man-made islands and spits. This eclectic community is located on the site of the historic Pajora Valley Consolidated Railroad. Geographically is at the mouth of the Eikhorn Slough and at the entrance to Monterey Canyon. Fine homes stud the beaches and the hills and on the other side of the mountains are rambling California ranch style homes.
Originally known as just Moss this unusual part of the north California coast was once a busy whaling port. It was named after Charles Moss who founded the community. It officially became Moss Landing in 1917. It is also home to the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Both are academic entities that study marine wild-life.
Moss Landing hosts many interesting events including an annual celebration of rock cod fishing every May, a blessing of the boats every May 1st, a special Nautical flea market and open houses at the Marine Laboratories.
Moss landing is also called the Antique Capital of the World because it has an unusually high number of vintage dealers and antique shops. Every year Moss Landing has a week long special antique fair at the end of July that includes showcases of old cars, mining equipment and farming equipment.
Housing prices can be a little lower here than in other scenic coastal parts of California because it is near a huge Gas Plant. The Moss Landing Natural Gas Plant is so large that it is the area’s most distinguishing landmark. On sunny days the plant is visible from the city of Monterey across the bay and also from Santa Cruz across the county line.
The homes in Moss Landing tend to be very eccentric and one-of-a-kind. For instance, you can find a Tiki style home here that is more typical of the styles you find in Hawaii or Miami. You can also find modular homes made out of square block, ranch homes made out of wood beams and many trailer homes. There have been many condos and townhomes that are newer built right on the sand dunes as well. Most homes are located just off of Highway 1, which runs along the coast.
This is a rural community so there is not a real designated gay area. You can find LGBT friendly restaurants and bars in the area or in nearby Salinas or San Francisco. The King of Clubs in the small town of Mountain View is the nearest gay hangout.
The average listing price for a home in Moss Landing is $781,080, as of August 28, 2013. There are rarely homes for sale in this area and very few homes are ever in foreclosure. As of August 28 only three homes were in a foreclosure process.
