New homes sales inched up in June, rising to 497,000 completed transactions, according to government data. When evaluating single-family homes specifically, sales climbed 8.3% in June, above the revised May rate of 459,000 units. Last month’s sales hovered 38.1% above the June 2012 estimate of 360,000 sales, the Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development noted in a report released Wednesday. Applications for mortgage refinances continued to tumble last week as mortgage rates hovered near two-year highs. The total number of mortgage applications “including refinances and home purchases” dropped 1 percent last week compared to the prior week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Existing home sales dip monthly but rise 15.2% annually

Existing-home sales fell from May levels, but have managed to beat out year ago levels for the past two years. Home values continue to rise with the median home price seeing a double-digit year-over-year increase for the seventh consecutive month, according to the National Association of Realtors.
