Occupy Wall Street takes on the housing crisis

Other

Occupy Wall Street and other housing activists are heading to neighborhoods hit hard by foreclosure Tuesday to protest the mistreatment of homeowners by mortgage lenders. Occupy Our Homes said it has scheduled a day of protests, with events scheduled in 25 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other cities. Among the actions expected to occur is so-called foreclosure defense, where protestors try to stop police from evicting residents of homes that are being foreclosed upon. Is That Rental in Foreclosure?

Other

More “accidental” landlords are surfacing as home owners turn their underwater homes into rentals to try to come up with some extra cash. But some of these accidental landlords are still unable to keep up with their mortgage payments and may become delinquent on their mortgage. So what’s this mean for the person renting their property? Some renters may suddenly be served with an eviction notice when they discover the property they are renting is being foreclosed upon, and only having days to vacate. One new Web site, CheckYourLandlord.com, allows […]

First American and NAHB add more housing markets to improvement index

Other

The number of improving housing markets expanded for a fourth consecutive month, according to the National Association of Home Builders/First American Improving Markets Index. The number of improving housing markets rose 37% to 41 in December from 30 in November. The new list features 20 new markets, including several major markets such as Washington, San Jose, Calif. and Toledo, Ohio. Nine smaller markets dropped of the list mainly because of softer house prices. The widening in both number and geographic diversity of markets is further evidence that housing markets are […]

Barclays analyst sees housing rebound coming in 2012

Other

Barclays Capital (BCS: 11.92 +0.51%) analyst Stephen Kim predicts a housing recovery buoyed by improving jobs numbers and the fact prices for nondistressed homes will have stabilized without government support. “In the absence of a government homebuyer incentives, prices for non-distressed home sales have stabilized for almost a year,” Kim said. “This is the most important trend in the housing industry right now, and we are amazed at how little attention it has been getting from the media and the street. This stability on the part of nondistressed prices has […]

Good Samaritans Step Up to Stop Foreclosures

Other

A 103-year-old Atlanta woman and her 83-year-old daughter who face foreclosure were set to be evicted from their home of 53 years last week when sheriffs and a moving company refused to evict the women. The incident also sparked calls from local and state politicians and others to not evict the centenarian and her daughter. The incident was one of several in the last few weeks in which good samaritans prevent what they view as wrongful foreclosures, AOL Real Estate News reports. In another recent occurence, a disabled veteran injured […]

REO investors squeezing out owner-occupants

Buying a Home

Owner-occupancy rates of real estate owned sales are plummeting as investors who recognize their economic value are taking advantage of bulk transactions, a trend that nonprofits and trade groups are closely monitoring. New Vista Asset Management, a San Diego-based provider of real estate services for sellers of foreclosed residential homes, performed a three-year study that found 17 of 18 counties hit hardest by the country’s mortgage crisis experienced a drop in REO properties sold to owner-occupiers. The company tracked all real estate sale transactions closed in the first quarter of […]

Buying a Home

Glut of Foreclosures Keeps Pressure on Housing Market; Consumer Confidence Jumps Home prices declined in September and are poised for a grim winter as banks step up their efforts to take back and sell foreclosed properties. Prices fell 0.6% from August, according to the widely watched Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller index of 20 major metropolitan areas, breaking a five-month run of increases during the spring and summer, when higher sales volumes typically firm up prices. For the third quarter, prices were down 3.9% nationwide compared with a year earlier, a slight […]

Foreclosure Crisis: Still a Long Way to Go, Study Says

Other

“The nation is not even halfway through the foreclosure crisis,” suggests a new report from the Center for Responsible Lending, “Lost Ground, 2011.” In the report, the Center for Responsible Lending analyzed 27 million mortgages issued over a five-year timespan. Researchers found that at least 2.7 million mortgages issued from 2004 through 2008, or 6.4 percent, have ended in foreclosure as of February 2011. Also during that time period, researchers found that 3.6 million households — or an additional 8.3 percent — are still at immediate or serious risk of […]
