High unemployment persists and the European debt crisis continues to threaten the economic recovery, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke told the Congressional Joint Economic Committee yesterday. The real estate market also continues to serve as “another drag” on recovery, he noted. Recent price increases with bank-owned homes are helping to provide an overall boost to the housing market, a recent report from Clear Capital says. U.S. attorneys are increasing their scrutiny of FHA lenders, having recouped $1 billion in losses for the agency from Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, Citigroup, and Flagstar, and issued subpoenas for information from others.
