Seattle homes below $200,000 gain buyers, not so in other markets

Buying a Home

Houses priced below $200,000 are receiving more attention in some markets while receiving less in others as borrowers react differently to record-high affordabilty. Home sales in Seattle rose to their highest level for a January in four years, driven by a more than 30% increase from a year earlier in sales of properties less than $200,000. Home prices trended lower, however, with the median sale price dipping to its lowest point in eight years, according to San Diego-based DataQuick. More […]

Metro housing price declines overshadow small-market gains: LPS

Buying a Home

Home prices in December fell to a level not seen since September 2002, as depreciations in larger metros overshadowed gains in smaller markets. December was the sixth consecutive month in which prices fell, according to real estate analytics firm Lender Processing Services ($24.23). Of the 411 metropolitan statistical areas that LPS tracks, 402 showed average home price depreciation from the previous month. From June 2007 through December 2008 — the period of the quickest fall since prices peaked in June […]

Economic and housing fears subside: Fannie Mae

Other

Americans’ economic fears are starting to subside with attitudes about personal finances, housing and employment improving, Fannie Mae said. Fannie ties this upswing in confidence to job gains made in recent months. A report from Automatic Data Processing Wednesday shows the private sector added 216,000 jobs last month. Respondents to Fannie’s national housing survey in February expect home prices to increase 0.8% on average over the next 12 months, while 15% believe home prices will fall and 53% believe prices […]

FHA to lower refinance premiums

Mortgage Loan

The Federal Housing Administration will lower refinance premiums, and major mortgage servicers will provide relief to wrongfully foreclosed military members, the White House said. President Barack Obama detailed the new housing measures in a press conference Tuesday afternoon, as voters in 10 states head to polls in the latest primary battle between Republican presidential candidates. “This is not something the government by itself can solve,” Obama said. “But I’m not one of those people who can sit around and wait […]

Buying cheaper than renting in nearly 100 major U.S. markets: Trulia

Buying a Home

Buying is more affordable than renting in 98 out of the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas — even in New York, Los Angeles and Boston, according to real estate company Trulia‘s rent vs. buy index. The index is based on asking prices for rental units and homes for sale on the company’s website between Dec. 1, 2011, and Feb. 29. “As rents rise and prices stagnate, homeownership is becoming even more affordable, but rising rents create a dilemma for people […]

Florida home prices dip, but key metrics on the mend

Buying a Home

Florida home prices and sales dipped in January from the previous month but showed some positive movement over year-ago figures, according to a statewide real estate association. The January median single-family sales price of $129,000 was 4.8% below $135,500 in December, Florida Realtors reported. Still, it was a 5.3% gain from year-ago figures with condo/townhomes surging 18.8% to $95,000 over January 2011 prices. Sales of foreclosures continued to distort home prices, the trade association said. Statewide sales of existing single-family […]

A look on the bright side of home values

Selling a Home

While many housing markets remain weak, some bright spots are popping up especially in areas where inventory is low in lower-priced segments, according to HomeValueForecast. The majority of statistical areas across the country demonstrated positive real estate trends in February, despite weak markets in some larger areas, according to HomeValueForecast, a partnership between Pro Teck Valuation Services and Collateral Analytics. Top markets in February include four in South Florida, a few around the Pennsylvania-Ohio border, and one each in Michigan, […]
