Fed Weighs Move to Take Mortgage Rates Even Lower

Mortgage Loan

The Federal Reserve’s policy-making committee meets today and Wednesday to decide whether the economy could use another boost. Threats from the ongoing debt crisis in Europe, a dismal U.S. job report in May, low inflation, and dropping consumer prices has shaken the U.S.’s economic recovery in recent weeks. Some analysts speculate that the Fed will decide at its policy meeting to extend Operation Twist, a plan in which the Fed has sold short-term securities in order to buy up longer-term bonds in an effort to reduce long-term interest rates. Banks Profit From Helping Home Owners Refinance

Buying a Home

By helping home owners refinance their mortgages into low interest rates, banks are finding unexpected profits. Banks stand to earn as much as $12 billion in revenue this year by refinancing mortgages under the government program known as Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP), Nomura Holdings Inc. estimates. The government revised its HARP program last year to encourage more banks to refinance mortgages of underwater home owners, helping these home owners take advantage of record low interest rates and cut their monthly mortgage payments. But critics say the change in the […]

Buying a Home

You may not have considered how your city ranks in the masculinity department. But COMBOS, along with “Best Places to Live” researcher Bert Sperling, released the fourth annual ranking of America’s manliest cities. The 50 largest metro areas were ranked on the quantity of “masculine” offers, such as number of major league sports teams; the availability of so-called “manly lifestyle” activities like fishing, woodworking, and home improvement work; and number of “manly businesses,” like home improvement stores and steak houses. Other

The housing revival is under way, but will need sustained job growth to continue concludes “The State of the Nation’s Housing” report from Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies. “What the housing sector needs is a sustained increase in jobs to bring household growth back to its long-term pace and spur demand,” says Chris Herbert, Director of Research at the Joint Center for Housing Studies, who noted that household formations have fallen “well below expected long-run rates” due to the inability of young adults to move out on their own. Foreclosures down for 20th straight month

Other

Servicers started more foreclosures in May from the month before but filings were still down 4% from last year, according to RealtyTrac. “U.S. foreclosure activity has now decreased on a year-over-basis for 20 straight months including May, but the jump in May foreclosure starts shows that it’s going to be a bumpy ride down to the bottom of this foreclosure cycle,” said RealtyTrac CEO Brandon Moore. The market expected more foreclosures after the $25 billion settlement was struck in March over past abuses and documentation problems. But most of the […]
