Top 10 ‘Manliest’ Cities

Buying a Home

You may not have considered how your city ranks in the masculinity department. But COMBOS, along with “Best Places to Live” researcher Bert Sperling, released the fourth annual ranking of America’s manliest cities. The 50 largest metro areas were ranked on the quantity of “masculine” offers, such as number of major league sports teams; the availability of so-called “manly lifestyle” activities like fishing, woodworking, and home improvement work; and number of “manly businesses,” like home improvement stores and steak houses. New York moves to criminalize foreclosure fraud

Foreclosures down for 20th straight month

Other

Servicers started more foreclosures in May from the month before but filings were still down 4% from last year, according to RealtyTrac. “U.S. foreclosure activity has now decreased on a year-over-basis for 20 straight months including May, but the jump in May foreclosure starts shows that it’s going to be a bumpy ride down to the bottom of this foreclosure cycle,” said RealtyTrac CEO Brandon Moore. The market expected more foreclosures after the $25 billion settlement was struck in March over past abuses and documentation problems. But most of the […]

Sellers to Buyers: Stop With the Lowball Offers!

Buying a Home

Home buyers who are looking for big discounts on housing nowadays are finding that their lowball offers are no longer sticking with sellers, and that their offers are getting a flat-out “no” when they’re way below the asking price. “Right off the bat, buyers say, ‘I want a steal,’ and I tell them they have to wipe that word out of their vocabulary,” says Jackie Smith, a real estate agent in Florida’s Broward and Palm Beach counties. “People come in, and they think the market is 2008 or 2009, when […]

After six consecutive weeks of reaching all-time record lows, fixed-rate mortgages reversed course this week, starting to inch upwards, Freddie Mac reports in its weekly mortgage market survey. Despite the slight uptick in fixed-rate mortgages this week, however, rates “remain near historic lows helping to keep home buyer affordability high, and providing a strong incentive for those looking to refinance,” according to Freddie Mac. Here’s a closer look at rates for the week ending June 14: 30-year fixed-rate mortgages: averaged 3.71 percent, with an average 0.7 point, up from last […]
