New Gov’t Agency to Regulate Credit Score Companies

Mortgage Loan

Americans’ credit scores are an important piece of information that banks use to determine if you can get a mortgage or not. As such, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says the companies that provide such details about Americans’ credit histories require more scrutiny. The consumer watchdog group announced Monday it will provide greater oversight of the industry, including the big three credit agency firms: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Consumers often complain about inaccurate information on their credit reports, but many are unsuccessful in getting the credit reporting agencies to correct […]

Zuckerberg Lands Dream Mortgage Rate

Mortgage Loan

Mortgage rates have been at record lows in recent weeks, but for Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Facebook, mortgage rates have been even sweeter. Zuckerberg recently refinanced a $5.95 million loan for his Palo Alto, Calif., home and landed a 1.05 percent mortgage rate, Bloomberg reports. Zuckerberg refinanced his loan into an adjustable-rate mortgage. ARMs usually offer low teaser rates for a period of time before they rise. These loans were blamed on being a big culprit of a soaring number of home owners who defaulted on their […]

Millennials Will Become Home Owners Later

Buying a Home

While some analysts predict that the housing market collapse could create an entire generation of permanent renters, others believe eventual recovery in the job market will prompt some renters to buy homes. The number of first-time buyers has slid 20 percent during the last three years, according to John Burns Real Estate Consulting, and home ownership will continue to decline among the 25-to-34 age segment for the coming three years.  Yet Rutgers Business School professor Ben Sopranzetti says, “This is purely an economic phenomenon, not a behavioral one.” Stagnant income […]

Mortgage applications fell 2.1% last week, the Mortgage Bankers Association said Wednesday. The weekly results were adjusted for the July 4th holiday. Oregon enacts mandatory mediation for homeowners seeking mortgage mods

Buying a Home

A foreclosure mediation program enacted by the Oregon State Legislature took effect Wednesday, providing distressed borrowers in the state with another avenue to remain in their homes. The new law gives homeowners a face-to-face meeting with firms holding their mortgages to discuss loan modifications and other work-out options. The state is not the first to enact a mandatory mediation program for certain borrowers, but it’s one of the few to gain helpful insight by watching other states launch similar mediation programs. “I think Oregon did a good job by seeing […]
