‘Immobile Move-up Buyers’ Press on Market

Buying a Home

Inventory of for-sale homes on the market has fallen 24 percent from a year ago and many are pointing to the “immobile move-up buyer” as the reason behind the drastic drop. Some analysts say the lack of move-up buyers in the market may also slow the overall housing recovery. Housing affordability—due to fallen home values and ultra-low mortgage rates—is at record highs. But mortgage applications for home purchases are down by 6 percent over the last year, according to data from the Mortgage Bankers Association. Some point to the still-high […]

The average 30-year mortgage had dropped or matched record lows in 13 of the last 14 weeks. Study: Desire for Home Ownership Unswayed

Buying a Home

Plenty of people say they prefer home ownership over renting, according to a newly released Fannie Mae national housing survey of more than 12,000 interviews from 2011. The study finds that the housing and financial crisis has not been a big factor in people’s decisions to rent or buy. “The nonfinancial benefits that people derive from the consumption of housing mitigate the negative financial experiences that many home owners have had,” says Steve Deggendorf, one of the authors of the study.
