When it comes to mortgages and home improvement, many consumers have some complaints, according to a new survey by the Consumer Federation of America, which reveals the top consumer complaints of last year. Among its list of 2011 top “worst” consumer gripes: mortgage-related problems, home improvement, timeshare sales and resales, Internet sales, and fraud. Signs of life in the residential property market are drawing realty agents back to the industry, with some national franchises faring better than others. E-mails can have power in a home sale, at least in one state. The Supreme Court of Massachusetts ruled that a series of e-mails between the buyer’s and seller’s attorneys created a binding agreement in a real estate transaction. The case, Feldberg v. Market concern over the strength of the economic recovery took Treasury yields to new depths, causing both 30- and 15-year fixed-rate mortgages to continue tumbling to historic lows. The Freddie Mac survey showed 30-year FRM averaged 3.49% for the week ending Thursday, a record low from last week’s 3.53%. Last year at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 4.55%. The average number of days homes are spending on the market has dropped by nearly 10 percent nationwide in the last year, according to June housing data from REALTOR.com. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage — the most popular choice among home buyers — is now a full percentage point lower than a year ago, Freddie Mac reports in its weekly mortgage market survey.
