Student Debt Pushes Homes Out of Reach

Mortgage Loan

While college-educated workers usually pull down higher incomes than those who do not obtain a post-secondary degree, a new report indicates that many new college graduates will be unable to obtain a mortgage because their student loans will push their debt-to-income ratio too high. Student loan debt soared to $1 trillion this year. The report from Young Invincibles, “Denied? The Impact of Student Debt on the Ability to Buy a Home,” found that today’s college graduates are actually worse off than previous generations, financially speaking. The authors estimate the average […]

Why is Customer Satisfaction With Real Estate Companies Falling?

Other

A new J.D. Power and Associates study suggests that customer satisfaction with real estate companies is falling among home buyers and sellers. In fact, the study—in its fifth year—suggests that home buyer satisfaction with real estate companies, in particular, is at its lowest level recorded. Seller satisfaction is also down this year, according to the 2012 Home Buyer/Seller Satisfaction Study of more than 2,700 home buyers and sellers. The study measures customer satisfaction with the largest real estate companies, factoring in views over the salesperson, office, and service. So what’s […]

Buyers Want a Bargain? Here’s Their Chance!

Buying a Home

For home buyers who are looking for a chance to buy low, they may not want to drag their feet too much longer. “Home prices have probably bottomed in most markets,” David Crowe, chief economist at the National Association of Home Builders, said in an NBC News-hosted Web chat with online visitors last week. “Mortgage rates are not likely to go down much further and will eventually rise as the economy recovers. Home builders are hungry and while you will still have to pay a fair price, you may not […]

Cities Weigh Eminent Domain for Underwater Mortgages

Mortgage Loan

Several local governments across the country are considering using the power of eminent domain to seize underwater mortgages — a controversial move that has been drawing widespread criticism in recent weeks. While the governments are considering various ways how to use eminent domain, the basic approach seems to be that the local government would seek court approval to pay a “fair market” value to a lender or investor holding the home owner’s underwater mortgage water treatment. If the local government is granted approval to take control over the mortgage, it […]
