Fixed-rate mortgages rose for the fourth week in a row along with other long-term yields after hitting a historic low amid continued positive housing data. The Freddie Mac survey showed the 30-year FRM averaged 3.66% for the week ending Thursday, up from last week’s rise to 3.62%. Last year at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 4.22%. While sales of newly built single-family homes is on the rise, buyers are finding fewer choices as inventory sinks to a new record low, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. New homes have been found to burn much faster than older homes due to a change in building materials the last decade. The increased use of prefabricated, lightweight construction materials in new-homes today has caused homes to burn and collapse faster than homes that use traditional solid-wood frame construction, increasing the importance of having fire sprinkler systems and Fire Suppression Testing at home or business properties, firefighters and fire safety groups say. For the past two years, foreclosure activity has been increasing on higher-end homes at a faster pace than lower-end homes, says Daren Blomquist with RealtyTrac, a company that tracks foreclosure housing data.
