Survey: Americans’ Attitudes Shift About Housing

Other

Americans are increasingly more optimistic about the direction of the housing market, according to a monthly survey of more than 1,000 Americans conducted by Fannie Mae. The majority of those surveyed expect home prices to rise 1.6 percent in the next year. Also, about 18 percent of those surveyed say now is a good time to sell, which is the highest percentage since the survey was initiated. “Consumer attitudes toward the housing market remain modestly positive, despite signs of increased concern over the direction of the economy,” says Doug Duncan, […]

Home Owners with Negative Equity Cause More Concern

Buying a Home

Mortgage delinquencies are down 30 percent from peaking in January 2010, yet the high number of underwater home owners still has many concerned. The Lender Processing Services’ Mortgage Monitor report for July shows a strong link between negative equity and new problem loans. “As negative equity increases, we see corresponding increases in the number of new problem loans,” says  Herb Blecher, vice president of LPS Applied Analytics. “In Nevada and Florida, two of the states with the highest percentage of underwater borrowers, more than 3 percent of borrowers who were […]

Iowa Realty Brings Veterans Into Real Estate

Other

Iowa Realty is reportedly the first realty firm in the nation to offer a training program to enable veterans to become real estate agents. The program covers the veteran’s real estate training and startup fees, which total around $3,000. So far, six veterans are attending the classes. “Because veterans are hardworking, highly disciplined, and accustomed to overcoming obstacles, we believe a career in real estate will be a great fit,” says Iowa Realty spokesman Brennan Buckley. “Our men and women in service have sacrificed for our country, and it’s up […]

Housing Progresses, But Has it Recovered?

Other

Home prices have posted some of their strongest gains this year in nearly six years. But while prices have likely hit bottom, the public shouldn’t confuse that with a full recovery. A lot more still has to happen to get to that point, analysts say. For one, inventories of homes for-sale need to reach more normal levels. The number of homes for sale are at an eight-year lows, The Wall Street Journal reports. Prices are rising in many areas but it’s because “there are more buyers chasing fewer homes and […]

Low-Wage Earners Struggle to Attain Home Ownership

Buying a Home

A study shows that most of the new jobs created post-recession have been low-wage jobs, which doesn’t bode well for helping to lift the housing market. From the first quarter of 2010 through the first quarter of 2012, low-wage jobs rose 2.7 times faster than mid to higher-wage jobs, according to a study by the National Employment Law Project. For the study, the advocacy group labeled low-waged jobs as those that pay between $7.69 to $13.83 per hour; mid-waged jobs between $13.84 to $21.11 per hour; and high-waged jobs between […]

Eminent domain gambles with local mortgage credit

Mortgage Loan

Threats of withdrawn mortgage credit may deter local governments from accepting proposals to seize underwater mortgages through eminent domain, not court rulings, according to one expert on the issue. The actual process itself may not face huge legal hurdles. “The legality is not an impediment to this program. Eminent domain is never popular. But the Supreme Court has very seldom, if ever, found local governments’ use of eminent domain as unconstitutional,” said Richard Friedman, managing attorney for Neal & Leroy, during a Source Media webinar for bond investors Thursday. A […]

Rural affordable housing struggles with oil and gas boom

Other

Waves of highly paid oil and gas drilling employees into rural areas is causing strain on local governments to provide affordable housing for locals who can no longer afford skyrocketing rents, according to a government study released Thursday. Drilling for oil and gas increased substantially in these areas over recent years. South Texas counties surrounded by the Eagle Ford Shale, for instance, saw a 27% increase in jobs in 2011. In Williams County, N.D., the population grew by 8% in just one year as new jobs increased by 41% due […]
