Foreclosures are falling nationwide, but some states are still facing high foreclosure rates. For the fifth-straight month in a row, Florida has the highest foreclosure rate in the nation, according to RealtyTrac’s latest January report. Billionaire B. Wayne Hughes is snatching up about 10,000 single-family homes to turn into rentals. Hughes has purchased the properties through his American Homes 4 Rent, which now makes the firm the second-biggest owner of single-family rentals (behind only Stephen Schwarzman’s Blackstone Group). Hughes incorporated American Homes 4 Rent last year as a non-public REIT to fund his venture into the single-family rental business. With record-low mortgage rates and rising selling prices, investor demand has been strong, and another homebuilder is looking to cash in with an initial public offering (IPO). Taylor Morrison Home Corp., a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based builder, has already doubled the the amount it seeks to raise its IPO to $500 million. Atlanta’s Metro Brokers with Better Homes and Gardens is launching a program that will pay for all the training and licensing for up to 3,000 vets who want to become real estate agents. Over the next five years, the brokerage hopes to bring about 50 vets each month into the program.
