Housing holds key to full job growth rebound

Other

The labor market quietly reached a milestone of sorts last month. Private-sector employment topped its pre-recession high — if housing-related industries are excluded. The achievement, revealed in a study by RBC Capital Markets, shows that much of the job market is chugging along nicely. But it also underscores the outsize importance of housing to the economy and the reality that the recovery isn’t likely to take off in earnest until housing kicks into a higher gear. “Housing has massive tentacles,” […]

5 Best Markets for Home Sellers

Other

Spring buying season is just around the corner, and sellers have gained an advantage in more markets across the country this year. With less competition from falling inventories, list prices have risen in many areas. Realtor.com recently identified the five best places to sell in 2013: Sacramento, Calif.: Inventories have declined here by 67.20 percent in January year-over-year while median prices have increased 40.2 percent. San Jose, Calif.: Median prices have risen nearly 25 percent year-over-year, and it ranks fourth […]

Big Foreclosure Discounts Are Fading Away

Other

During the mortgage crisis, foreclosed homes were selling, on average, for a 25 percent discount compared to original market values. In the fourth quarter of 2012, the average foreclosure discount dropped to 12.2 percent, according to the latest data from FNC’s Foreclosure Market report. The median sales price of foreclosures is $93,000; the median price of non-distressed home is $183,000, FNC reports. “The fact that we are seeing a combination of rising home prices and a bottoming out of foreclosure […]

For-Sale Home Inventories Remain Tight

Selling a Home

Inventory levels in 2012 reached an 11-year low and fell yet again last month, further limiting the number of homes for sale nationwide. Inventories of for-sale homes were down by 16.5 percent in January year-over-year, and fell 5.6 percent from December, according to the latest data compiled from Realtor.com. Inventories typically fall in December and January in preparation of the spring buying season. “But the shortage of homes for sale in a growing number of U.S. markets is maddening for […]

Homebuilders Making a Land Grab

Other

As the housing market heats up, home builders are going after open land. The nation’s four largest builders — Lennar, Pulte Group, D.R. Horton, and KB Home — spent between $500 million to $1 billion each buying land the past year. However, one of the most aggressive property buyers has been Standard Pacific, ranked 13th largest homebuilder in the nation. It snatched up $711 million in empty lots and undeveloped land last year — nearly the $785 million that D.R. […]

If a Home Gets Hit by a Meteor, Who Pays?

Other

After a meteor struck western Siberia and more meteors threatened the entire globe on Friday, CNNMoney asked the question: Who pays for damage to a home if hit by a space object? Rest easy, “your insurance covers falling objects,” says Robert Hartwig, president of the Insurance Information Institute. In the rare events when meteors have crashed through home owners’ roofs over the years, insurers have paid the damage for those insured, Hartwig says. “Blue ice” — the frozen sewage that […]
