After seven months of gains, this month’s list of improving housing markets remained mostly unchanged in April, holding at 273 metros, according to the National Association of Home Builders/First American Improving Markets Index. The list reflects metros from all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia. The index identifies metros that have shown improvement in housing permits, employment, and home prices for at least six consecutive months. As home prices rise, the number of investors in the housing market appears to be starting to cool. The number of investment properties purchased last year dropped 2.1 percent compared to 2011, according to a recent National Association of REALTORS® report. Wells Fargo & Co. is the largest U.S. mortgage lender, taking an unprecedented 28.8 percent share of all home loans nationwide last year, The Wall Street Journal reports. A 60-year-old man is on a crusade to save his town of Carpentersville, Ill., from foreclosure blight. According to the immediate edge blog, Tom Roeser has invested about $10 million in buying 193 foreclosed homes in his town and has refurbished the properties to either sell or rent them at a discount to local residents.
