Home finance balance write-offs drop

Other

Home finance balances written off in the first quarter of 2013 totaled $43.3 billion, down nearly 23% from $55.4 billion a year earlier, credit reporting agency Equifax said Tuesday. According to the Equifax March National Consumer Credit Trends Report, this marks a five-year low in the number of home finance balances classified as bad debts to be written off. The loans included in the calculation are debts extinguished through foreclosure, pushed into REO status, or discharged through bankruptcy or otherwise written off by the lender. The year-over-year change in home […]

Southern California washes away foreclosure impact

Southern California washes away foreclosure impact

Other

The median price paid for a house in Southern California rose 23.4% from a year earlier, representing a 56-month high in March, according to San Diego-based DataQuick. The median sales price for the six-county Southland region was $345,000, up 8% from $320,000 in February and up 23.4% from $280,000 one-year prior. The previous median high was $348,000 in July 2008. “Price measures continue to rise for two simple reasons,” said John Walsh, DataQuick president. “First, demand for homes has risen at a time when the available supply is unusually low. Prices […]

7 Housing Markets That Are Roaring Back

Other

The latest FNC Residential Price Index, an index created for the mortgage industry, recorded a 28-month high for home prices in February, the most recent data available. The index increased 6.1 percent — the fastest rate it’s grown since July 2006. The index shows the strongest price momentum is occurring in Phoenix, where prices have surged nearly 30 percent in the past year. “The city’s rapid price climb is attributable to active investment purchase of distressed properties that has pushed up overall home prices,” according to FNC. Many of the […]

Rising Costs Hamper Builders’ Confidence

Other

An index that measures homebuilder confidence dropped in April, largely attributed to the increasing costs of building materials, concerns about the lack of supply of developed lots, and labor shortage, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index. The index measures builder perceptions of single-family home sales and sales expectations. In the latest reading for April, builder confidence dropped two points to 42. Any number below 50 indicates that more builders view conditions as poor than good. “Supply chains for building materials, developed lots, and skilled […]

Waiving Appraisal Contingency Causes Concerns

Buying a Home

Prices are on the rise in many areas, but housing experts say appraisals don’t always immediately catch up to these sudden increases. As such, in some parts of the country sellers are reportedly insisting that home buyers waive the appraisal contingency. And some buyers who are seeing a shortage of homes for sale are agreeing to that condition, which means that if a property appraises for less than the contract price, the buyer will come up with the extra money. The waive of the appraisal contingency has some agents concerned. […]

Monday Morning Cup of Coffee: Rising home prices raise concerns

Buying a Home

HousingWire’s Monday Morning Cup of Coffee takes a look at news from the weekend, with more coverage on bigger issues. With existing home prices up 10% in February from one year prior and inventories at a 20-year low, many homebuyers are facing a dilemma, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal: paying more for a home today, compared with a year ago, or paying even more tomorrow at a time when interest rates might also be higher.
