Is Gender Bias an Issue in Loan Applications?

Mortgage Loan

Initial findings from a Woodstock Institute study of 257,000 purchase loans and refinancings originated in the Chicago area in 2010 indicate that gender bias may play a role in denials. Based on 2010 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data, researchers found that purchase applications with a woman as the primary borrower and a man as the co-borrower were 24 percent less likely to be approved than if a man applied as the primary borrower. The figure rises to 39 percent for […]

Multifamily survey offers peek at rental market

Other

Renting a property or apartment long-term is the only viable solution for many Americans as lending standards stay tight and potential buyers struggle with downpayments.  This in turn makes multifamily ownership and development a bigger issue for the nation’s housing agencies. Approximately 1 in 5 American households reside in multifamily rental buildings, according to data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau. The two entities launched a survey to provide more insight into […]

JPMorgan raises home price forecast, sees long road to recovery

Buying a Home

JPMorgan Chase expects home prices to rise 7% in 2013 as investors continue to take interest in nonperforming loans and distressed properties. The forecast for 2013 is more optimistic than initially expected. Although most investors still believe home prices will increase by less than 5%, some investors expect home price growth to increase as much as 15%, according to JPMorgan’s ($50.02 -0.98%) February investor survey. “As we pointed out in our 2013 outlook, the distressed sale discount should continue to […]

Homebuilders target active markets

Other

Homebuilders are keeping their cool and waiting patiently until younger Americans transition from renting to buying a home. The good news is housing supply is down, creating some room for homebuilders to return when the market balance leans in their favor. At the lowest level since January 1994, the inventory of homes for sale continues to drop to dangerous lows. Currently at 2.07 million units, housing inventory is at its sixth lowest level in 30 years, according to Capital Economics. […]

Economists Revise Housing Figures Amid Optimism

Other

Several economists have recently revised their predictions on housing values to reflect a stronger-than-expected real estate rebound, and some have even doubled their original forecasts over the rise in home prices. For example, economists at Bank of America revised their home price forecast from 4.7 percent this year to 8 percent. Capital Economics’ Economist Paul Diggle upwardly revised his home price forecast too, from a 5 percent projection to an 8 percent rise in home prices this year. “Prices of […]
