Making Home Affordable Program Extended 2 Years

Buying a Home

A federal program that helps troubled homeowners receive modified mortgages is being extended by two years, and will run to the end of 2015, administration officials said Thursday. The extension of the Making Home Affordable Program, which includes the Home Affordable Modification Program, follows a two-year extension of a government refinancing program. “The housing market is gaining steam, but many homeowners are still struggling,” said Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew. “Helping responsible homeowners avoid foreclosure is part of our wide-ranging efforts to strengthen the middle class.” As of March, more than […]

Short Sales Losing Favor with Lenders?

Other

Lenders may be less inclined to approve short sales due to rising home prices, according to a new report by RealtyTrac. During the first quarter, short sales posted a 35 percent drop compared to year-ago levels. “The decrease in short sales was a bit of surprise given that 11 million home owners nationwide still owe more on their homes than they’re worth,” says Daren Blomquist, spokesman for RealtyTrac. “Rising home prices are taking away the incentive for short sales on the part of both home owners and lenders.” Foreclosure prices […]

Home Sellers Take the Power Seat

Selling a Home

The housing recovery has “transformed the mind-set of many buyers and sellers who grew accustomed to the buyers’ market we saw for years,” says Rick Davidson, CEO of Century 21. “Buyer confidence is building back up and demand is strong… sellers are now in a more favorable position.” Eight-five percent of 365 home buyers recently surveyed by the real estate brokerage said they are willing to make compromises when buying a home in order to get a transaction complete. Tighter inventories of for-sale homes have prompted more buyers to get […]

Rising mortgage rates are prompting some renters to jump off the fence and consider buying a home, so they don’t miss out.  Mortgage rates have seen a sharp rise in recent weeks. Mortgage applications for home purchases have risen 3 percent and are up 14 percent over year-ago levels, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.  Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke recently suggested that the Fed’s efforts to keep mortgage rates at record lows may be nearing an end soon.  “It’s amazing to see the frenzied pick-up in home buying, as renters […]

Other

Investors are picking up shares of appliances, building materials, and even pickup trucks in betting on a widening housing recovery, The Wall Street Journal reports. Investors say that the increase in residential construction and home renovation represents a big opportunity on Wall Street. After Deadly Tornadoes, Some Lawmakers Seek to Mandate Storm Shelters

Selling a Home

Following the deadly tornadoes in Moore, Okla., last week, sales of storm shelters and safe rooms are reportedly soaring along “Tornado Alley,” and some lawmakers and city officials are even trying to mandate them in some areas. Many of the homes in Tornado Alley lack basements due to the high water table and red clay soil, which absorbs moisture quickly, according to housing experts. Moore, Okla., now has the rare distinction of being the only known city to be struck by two massive EF5 tornadoes in recent years — the […]
