Kiplinger attributed strengthening economies, below-average unemployment rates, and increasing buyer confidence as turning these metros into seller’s markets. New home starts on private residences have been teetering over the past few months, but rose 6.8% from the revised April estimate of 856,000, reaching 914,000 in May.

Homebuilder confidence is at its highest level in seven years, reaching a big milestone in June, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI). The index, which measures homebuilder sentiment over the new-home market, rose eight points in June to 52 — any reading above 50 indicates that more builders view sales conditions as good rather than poor.

Canadians who come to the U.S. to escape the cold weather may soon be able to stay longer.  A Senate bill has been proposed to allow retired Canadians 55 or older who own a second home, have a rental agreement, or a hotel reservation to receive a visa to stay in the U.S. for up to 8 months — which is two months longer than the current law.

California home prices increased by the most in 33 years as a result of strong sales growth in higher-priced markets and continued housing supply shortage, pushing up median home prices in May, the California Association of Realtors said.
