A Look at Mesquite's History

Mesquite began as a railway stop between Dallas and Shreveport, Louisiana but it became a town in its own right in 1887.  Mesquite has a rich history as a farming community that grew cotton, corn, hay, and sugar, but began to grow extensively in the 1950s when the town expanded around a complex still known as the Big Town Mall.  The town grew quickly because of its agricultural production, and also quickly became an important place for commerce and trade, with many businesses establishing themselves there. PFLAG Dallas is Mesquite’s local chapter of the national PFLAG organization. PFLAG is the largest grassroots organization of its kind in the country and has 500 chapters with more than 200,000 members in the United States. PFLAG plays a critical role in providing advocacy, support, and resources to the LGBTQ community, and offers monthly support meetings, as well as resources, advocacy, and networking opportunities for the LGBTQ community, friends, and allies.

What's the Weather Like in Mesquite?

Those who live in Mesquite can expect to experience all four distinct seasons each year, with temperatures ranging from 35° to 95° throughout the year. Typically, summer is warm and lasts from May through September, while the cooler season lasts from November through February. During the remainder of the year, residents can expect pleasant temperatures and can look forward to beautiful spring blooms and changing fall leaves. Mesquite receives around 40 inches of rain, on average, each year, and about 1 inch of snow.

The Mesquite Championship Rodeo is definitely a can't-miss event in Mesquite. Founded in 1958,  it operates from April through to September and features all kinds of rodeo performances, many of which are televised. It’s great fun for all, and definitely worth adding to your calendar.

Dallas Pride

Only about a 20-minute drive from Mesquite, Pride Dallas is one biggest annual pride celebrations in the country, and it’s one celebration you won’t want to miss. Whether you enjoy parades, parties, networking opportunities, family-friendly activities, or all of the above, you can find it here!

Florence Ranch Homestead

The Florence Ranch Homestead is located in downtown Mesquite, and it is an excellent place to spend a beautiful day learning about the unique history of the area. Built in 1871, it serves as a museum celebrating local rural Texan style.  A similar place is the Opal Lawrence Historical Park, which is a completely preserved original Mesquite homestead complete with chickens and a root cellar. 

Mesquite Arena

Rodeo is an essential part of Mesquite’s culture, and there’s no better place to enjoy it than the Mesquite Arena! The crowds are large, the rodeo is exciting, and it’s always a fun place to spend a day or evening.

Mesquite Nightlife

JR's Bar and Grill

Established in 1980, JR’s Bar and Grill (named for one of the main characters in the 1980s soap opera Dallas) is considered by many to be one of the most popular gay bars in the city. Located in nearby Cedar Springs, it is known for its cheap drinks, friendly atmosphere, and comfortable patio area.

The Round-Up Saloon

The Round-Up Saloon, located only a short drive away in Dallas, has a country-western theme with a dance floor and video screens. It offers six different bars, plenty of wonderful live music, and nice outdoor patio, and endless opportunities for fun, dancing, and socializing.
