A Look at Grand Prairie's History

Grand Prairie was initially established in 1863 by Alexander Dechman, who named it first after himself, and subsequently, after the town of Grand Prairie, Ohio. It was officially incorporated in 1909. Beginning shortly thereafter with the advent of World War One, Grand Prairie became an important center for aviation and defense, and remains so to this day, as the home of Lockheed Martin. It’s also a city with many other thriving industries, and much to see and do, and since its founding, it has grown steadily and attracted a diverse and friendly population.  For so many reasons, Grand Prairie would be a great place to call home.

  • The Grand Prairie baseball team is named the “AirHogs” after the town’s unique aeronautical history.

PFLAG Dallas is the Grand Prairie area’s local chapter of the national PFLAG organization, which is the largest grassroots organization of its kind in the country. With 500 chapters and more than 200,000 members in the United States, PFLAG plays a critical role in providing advocacy, support, and resources to the LGBTQ community.

Gay for Good

Gay for Good is a group that seeks to mobilize and energize the LGBTQ community to interact with the greater Fort Worth and Dallas communities by volunteering time to various social projects. Each month, Gay for Good selects a different non-profit in the city to benefit from its service. Meet a friend, have some fun, and do some good!

What's the Weather Like in Grand Prairie?

The weather in Grand Prairie is generally warm, and from April to October residents can generally expect temperatures to range from 80 to 98 degrees. From November to March, which is the cooler season, temperatures will usually vary from about 32 to 70 degrees. The average annual rainfall is just under 34 inches, and the area gets an occasional dusting of snow, although that is somewhat rare. Generally, any time is a wonderful time to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors in Grand Prairie.

The Urban Cowboy Saloon

The Urban Cowboy Saloon is Fort Worth's largest LBGTQ bar, and certainly worth the short drive from Grand Prairie. With a fun disco honkey-tonk feel, this bar guarantees a good time. It is a pillar of the LGBTQ community and is frequented by all.

1851 Club

The 1851 Club is a very popular LGBTQ bar in nearby Arlington, offering dancing, darts, pool, karaoke, and drag shows, as well as friendly crowds, and plenty of opportunities to have fun.
