It is home to nearly 300,000 people, a growing and thriving LGBTQ community, an active arts community, and several large companies, particularly in the automotive industry. A Bit of Toledo History

The area that is now Toledo, like much of Ohio and the United States generally, was populated by several Native American tribes before its modern-day settlement. In the 1600s, European explorers first discovered the area, and throughout the 1600s and 1700s, both French and English traders lived in the area. Eventually, as more and more settlers arrived, the city of Toledo itself was founded in 1833. After the completion of the Miami and Erie Canal in 1845 Toledo grew rapidly. It eventually became a city known for its glass manufacturing industry, ultimately earning Toledo its nickname "The Glass City". Toledo retains that unique character to this day, and it remains a distinctive city with a growing arts community, many businesses, a thriving healthcare industry, well-supported local sports teams, and plenty to see and do.
