Jackson LGBTQ City Guide

A Look at Jackson's History

Jackson initially began as a settlement on the Pearl River called LeFluer’s Bluff, so named for the French-Canadian trader Louis LeFleur, who founded a trading post on the site. It remained that way until 1821, when, four years after Mississippi became a state, the legislature chose the city to be the state capital. It was then renamed after President Andrew Jackson. The town grew quickly because of its importance as the capital city, and also as an important place for commerce and trade, with many businesses establishing themselves there. Today, Jackson is a diverse and thriving city with plenty of opportunities and much to see and do for all who call it home.
