Pensacola LGBTQ City Guide

If you're thinking of making a move to the panhandle portion of the Sunshine State Florida, Pensacola is one city that is well worth a closer look. Pensacola is a beautiful coastal city known for its white-sand beaches, bright blue waters – and for the Blue Angels who fly through its skies regularly too. A Look at Pensacola's History

Nearly 500 years ago, the Spanish explorer Don Tristan de Luna sailed a fleet of ships carrying 1500 people from Europe to the New World, finally landing in “Panzacola” to establish one of the first European settlements in the continental United States. Eventually, the area became part of United States territory, and since that time, has grown steadily, as both an important port city, as a center of aviation and important military operations, and also as a center of tourism, thanks to its gorgeous beaches and stunning natural beauty.

A Few Fun Facts About Pensacola

  • Pensacola’s name has a rather unique meaning – “Panzacola,” as it was first named, means, “land of hairy people.”
  • The Navy’s Flight Demonstration Team, better known as the Blue Angels officially named Sherman Field in Pensacola as their home base in 1955 — and they have called Pensacola home ever since.
  • For those who love outdoor water recreation, Florida has a 1,515-mile paddling trail called the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail – and it starts in Pensacola Bay.
