A Look at Salinas's History

Salinas' earliest inhabitants were small tribes of Native Americans. The area largely remained this way until the early 1800s, when outside settlers began to arrive in the area. Named for a nearby salt marsh, Salinas became the seat of Monterey County in 1872 and was officially incorporated in 1874. Salinas has always been an important center of agriculture due to its favorable climate, and this importance grew with the arrival of the railroad in the area in the mid-1800s.
