Elk Grove, California wasn’t always home to more than 160,000 people. In fact, it wasn’t until 2004-2005 that the city’s population really shot up. During that time, Elk Grove topped the list of fastest growing U.S. cities. This city, which sits south of Sacramento, is now the 30th largest city in the state and boosts the 4th largest school district.
The school district is, in fact, the largest employer in the city. Other large employers include Apple, Kaiser Permanente, and several hospitals. While Elk Grove has grown and continues to expand, albeit slowly, it was hit hard by the mortgage crisis in 2008, cutting off its rapid expansion.
Elk Grove is considered a fairly LGBT-friendly suburb of Sacramento, and a lot of people feel very welcome in the city. Condos in this area start at $168,500 and top off at around $270,000. Single family homes range from $375,000 to almost $10 million.
