Ottawa, Ontario – Proud to Be Gay Life in a Historic Cultural Center

Amazing Ottawa, Ontario is a city of rivers and canals backed by the Gatineau Mountains located just over the bridge to Quebec.  This capital city of Canada is located on the south bank of the Ottawa River in Southern Ontario. It is a progressive urban center with two official languages and a diverse and very gay-positive population. Gay marriage is legal here and Mercer rates the city as having the second highest quality of living of any large city in North America. It is also the third cleanest city in the world.

. The modern city, which has a population of 1,451,415, consists of ten historic neighborhoods including many parts that still look like small villages because of the older architecture. This includes Gloucester, Nepean, Vanier, Rockcliffe Park, Blackburn Hamlet and Orleans.  There is also the forested area of Kanata and the Village of Stittsville.  On the other side of the Manotick River is Manotich and Riverside South, which consist largely of huge middle class family homes.

Ottawa is one of the oldest cities in North America and boasts many beautiful old streets, some with the original cobblestones lined with historic buildings as old as the 1700s. Many of these buildings have also been merged nicely with more historic architecture.

If you love gothic revival architecture you will love Ottawa. It is a signature style that dominates most of the public buildings and also many homes. There are also many examples of semi-detach, rowhouses and apartment buildings done in mid-century styles.

The city is also a wonderful place for pet-lovers, hikers and bikers to live. Pathways run all along the Ottawa River, Rideau River and Rideau Canal.  There are also many areas in the downtown district that have been turned into pedestrian outdoor malls including Sparks Street and the Bytown Market near the Peace Tower.

This is a city with hot humid summers and cold and crispy winters. Residents ski in the nearby hills and go skating on the Rideau canal, which usually freezes completely over. It is home to Winterlude, Bluesfest, The Canadian Tulip festival, the Ottawa Dragon Boat Festival and Fringe Festival.

Canada is a country that is accepting of the gay lifestyle. In Ottawa a lot of the gay action is centered around the downtown corner of Somerset and Bank Street.  This area is also sometimes known as Centertown and has famous gay hangouts such as the leather club called The Cell Block, the piano lounge called Silhouette and the casual drinking hole known as Swizzles.  There is also a well known gay-owned Mexican restaurant in the Byward market called The Ahora.

For the best places to find a home to buy or an apartment to rent it is a good idea to consult a gay Ottawa realtor who lives there. Parts of the family are very civil-servant-with-families oriented which some may find a bit dull so consult with a real-estate expert.
