To keep monthly mortgage payments more affordable, more home buyers are reaching deeper into their pockets to make larger down payments, according to a new survey by LendingTree of 600 home buyers. Compared to the 1980s, when mortgage rates hovered above 10%, today’s rates remain relatively low. In early May, the 30-year, fixed-rate shot up to 4.46%, before settling back to 4.29% last week, according to Freddie Mac.
