Bay area home prices down 47% from peak

Buying a Home

The median home sales price in the San Francisco Bay area plummeted 47% in the past four years, hitting $351,500 in December, compared to $665,000 in the middle of 2007, DataQuick said. The steep drop shows how far prices have fallen in a metro area where sellers used to record high profits by offloading real estate. DataQuick attributes half of the peak-to-trough drop to declining home values, while the rest is tied to a shift in the sales mix. The area saw 7,494 home sales in December, DataQuick said. That […]

Pay off mortgage early to save money

Mortgage Loan

An early mortgage payoff can net substantial interest savings compared to making scheduled payments for 15 or 30 years. Paying off your mortgage might sound like an ambitious plan, especially if you have recently refinanced into a 30-year term. But it’s still smart for homeowners to give some serious thought as to how they’ll pay off their home loan; if not in 2012, then sometime. An early mortgage payoff can net substantial interest savings compared to making scheduled payments for 15 or 30 years. Paying more quickly reduces your housing […]

Home prices dip again in FNC index

Buying a Home

U.S. home prices fell 0.4% in November from October, the fourth-straight monthly decline according to FNC‘s residential price index. November prices also decreased 4.6% from a year earlier, though FNC said year-over-year declines have stabilized in recent months. The Oxford, Miss.-based company said delinquent mortgages and foreclosures continue to handcuff the housing market. FNC’s measure excludes sales of foreclosed homes and is not seasonally adjusted. CoreLogic (CLGX: 13.75 +0.95%) reported last week a 4.3% year-over-year drop in national home prices for November. Without distressed sales, which include all short sales […]

More failed HAMP trials end in foreclosure

Mortgage servicers are putting more failed Home Affordable Modification Program trials through foreclosure than they were one year ago. According to Treasury Department data released last week, 10.6% of the more that 615,000 canceled HAMP trials completed the foreclosure process as of Nov. 1. That’s more than double the 4.4% of failed HAMP trials foreclosed on as of November 2010. While foreclosures are increasing, alternative modifications on these loans are dropping. Of the canceled HAMP trials, 39.7% went through the bank’s own private programs, down from 45.4% over the same […]
