Mortgage defaults increased nationwide in the fourth quarter as more Americans began to default on all types of consumer debt. The S&P Dow Jones/Experian credit default indices made this alarming trend more transparent in data released Tuesday. The indices national composite, which measures all consumer defaults, increased for three consecutive months in a row, reaching a 1.72% default rate in December. Home prices nationwide, including distressed sales, rose 7.4% year-over-year in November, according to the latest home price index from CoreLogic ($26.90 0%). This change represents the ninth consecutive month of year-over-year price gains and the largest increase since May 2006. The inventory of foreclosed homes posted big drops in the final months of 2012, Lender Processing Services reported Monday. U.S. homes in the foreclosure inventory dropped 3.51 percent in November — following a 2.84 percent decrease in October, and a 10 percent decline in September.
