The number of home owners underwater on their mortgage—owing more than their home is currently worth—continues to drop, but “sand states” still account for the highest number of borrowers facing negative equity. Twenty-two percent of all residential properties with a mortgage—or about 10.7 million home owners—were underwater by the end of the third quarter for 2012, according to CoreLogic data. U.S. home prices continued to inch their way up, showing a 0.5% increase from October to November, according to the latest Lender Processing Services home price index. Home prices grew 5.1% year-over-year, based on LPS’s analysis of homes in 15,500 ZIP codes.
