Running was born and raised in the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey where she could always be found exploring the woods or riding her bicycle. She was an active board member of the Outdoor Club of South Jersey, leading hikes and bike rides.

Yearning for more of an outdoor experience than Southern New Jersey had to offer, she moved to Seattle, where she hiked in the Olympic and Cascade Mountains.
